How does acupuncture work?

The scientific explanation is that acupuncture works by stimulating specific points on the body to activate the nervous system, induce the release of chemicals and hormones that affect the body's internal regulating system and promote self-healing mechanisms. The insertion of fine needles at these points triggers a cascade of physiological responses, including the release of endorphins, modulation of neurotransmitters, and regulation of blood flow. This stimulation helps to restore balance in the body, relieve pain, and enhance overall well-being.

How is medical acupuncture different from traditional Chinese acupuncture?

Medical acupuncture, in contrast to traditional Chinese acupuncture, combines the principles of ancient Eastern medicine with modern medical knowledge and scientific research. While traditional Chinese acupuncture aims to balance the flow of qi (energy), medical acupuncture primarily focuses on stimulating the nervous system to produce therapeutic effects. It incorporates anatomically defined points, in addition to traditional acupuncture points, based on the understanding of the body's structure and physiology in Western medicine. Medical acupuncture practitioners often employ evidence-based techniques and work in collaboration with healthcare professionals for comprehensive care.

How many treatments do I need?

This differs from person to person. For more chronic complex conditions 1-2 weekly treatments spread over months may be required. Acute issues may require fewer visits. For health maintenance annual, quarterly, or monthly visits may be all that is needed.

Do the needles hurt when placed?

Acupuncture needles are made of stainless steel and are extremely thin. Most patients only feel mild discomfort while the needles are being inserted; many feel no pain at all. All of the needles used in our practice are sterile single use needles.
